This is a Georgian, “Bristol” blue Indian club-shaped Brandy decanter dating from the beginning of the 19th century, c1830.
The decanter is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows the age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 200 years of use.
The decanter has a gilded everted pouring lip and is round in cross-section. The decanter is decorated with a gilt faux label for Brandy “suspended” from a gilt chain. The base carries a rough pontil mark and measures 7 cm (2.8 inches) in diameter. The decanter measures 19 cm (7.6 inches) in height without the stopper and 24.5 cm (9.8 inches) with the stopper inserted.
The stopper is of similar metal but is probably not the original. It has no gilded “B” on it as we would expect and is somewhat plain, with little ornamentation. It is a good fit, is of the right period and metal, and looks the part.
There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any other obvious evidence of restoration. The gilding is rubbed in places.
It weighs in at 340 g. (~ 12 oz.).
