This is a Georgian, wrythen-moulded monteith or bonnet glass dating from the end of the 18th century, c1780, and of possible Jacobite significance.
The glass is in good condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 240 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.
The glass is in the clear colourway and double ogee in shape and measures 5.7 cm (2.3 inches) in diameter at the upper rim. The bowl is moulded with lightly wrythened panels. The bowl ends in a short moulded stem and a six-petal rose shaped foot that measures 6.3 cm (2.5 inches) in diameter. Some collectors believe the six-petal rose shaped foot was a sign of Jacobite allegiance. The glass is 7.5 cm (3 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration. There is a collector’s sticker to the bottom of the foot and another to the top. There is what appears to be some very light water staining to the interior although this could just result from the combination of the wrythening and the lateral tool marks.
It weighs 140 g. (~ 5 oz.).
