This is a Victorian English mould-blown glass engraved tankard with an applied handle dating from the second half of the 19th century, c1870.
The glass is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 150 years of use.
The glass has a tapered cylindrical bowl measuring 8.2 cm (3.3 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is engraved with ferns and foliage representative of the period of pteridomania (obsession with ferns) and has a basal band of panel-cutting. The glass ends in a plain concave base which measures 10.2 cm (4.1 inches) in diameter. The glass is 13.2 cm (5.3 inches) in height. The handle was first applied to the bottom of the bowl and then finished off at the top. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is a small unburst bubble just under the rim and a tiny black inclusion (probably coal) just by it around which the glass has very slightly bruised.
It weighs in at 640 g. (~ 1 lb. 7 oz.).
