This is a small Iittala Kantarelli vase, designed by Tapio Wirkkala and dating from the early 1950s. The shape was inspired by the chanterelle mushroom which grows wild in Finnish forests and the original vase won the 1951 Milan Triennial. An example can be seen in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The larger 21 cm high model can still be purchased directly from Iittala at a cost of £1,250 (at date of drafting this description).
The vase is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with use.
The vase is broadly cylindrical in shape at the bottom spreading out towards the undulating top lip, which measures 9.5 cm (3.8 inches) across at its widest point. The vase is blown in clear glass and is decorated with wheel-engraved vertical lines cut into the surface. The vase is 9.5 cm (3.8 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. The glass frog is not included in the price.
Lead glass. It weighs in at 148 g. (~ 5 1/4 oz.).
