Georgian clear glass gilded Rum decanter

This is a Georgian, gilded, clear glass, Indian club-shaped Rum decanter dating from the beginning of the 19th century, c1830.

The decanter is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows the age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 200 years of use.

The decanter has a gilded everted pouring lip and is round in cross-section. The decanter is decorated with a gilt label for Rum below a neck gilded with a trailing, fruiting vine. The base carries a rough pontil mark and measures 7.2 cm (2.9 inches) in diameter. The decanter measures 18 cm (7.2 inches) in height without the stopper and 22.5 cm (9 inches) with the stopper inserted. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration. The gilding is rubbed at the pouring rim.

The stopper is of lozenge form and is probably not the original. The decanter has a gilded number “5” to the top of the neck and this would normally match with a stopper that had the same number on it. We would also expect the stopper to have a gilded R on it in the same font as on the decanter. It looks the part however.

English lead glass weighing in at 310 g. (~ 11 oz.).
