This is a rare Georgian stoup or benetier de chevet dating from the middle of the 18th century, and probably French in origin although they were also made in Spain and in Austria by Riedel. Stoups hung outside near the door of a Roman Catholic church and contained holy water for worshipers to dip their fingers in before crossing themselves. A good selection of these can be seen in Jacqueline Bellanger’s book, Verre D’usage et de Prestige on pages 249-252.
The stoup is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear consistent with some 250 years of use.
The stoup has a clear glass terraced bowl with a crimped, turned over rim measuring 7.2 cm (~ 2.9 inches) in diameter. The bowl ends in a small knop or protrusion which carries a cleanly broken-off pontil mark to the bottom; although it may have also been chipped off. The looped handles of the bowl meet up with an arched embellishment which would be used for hanging the stoup on a nail. The stoup measures 24.5 cm (9.8 inches) in height. There are no other chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is some staining to the inside of the fold, hence the black patches.
It weighs 160 g. (~ 5 1/2 oz.).
