This is a rare Georgian, facet cut stem wine glass, enamelled with a portrait of Cardinal Henry Stuart, the Jacobite Duke of York, the younger brother of Charles Stuart (Bonny Prince Charlie) and dating from the end of the 18th century, c1790. A set of six such glasses from the Royal Brierley Collection were sold at Sotheby’s in March 1998. Simon Cottle, one time Head of European Glass and Ceramics at Bonhams (1997-2007), postulated in his work, “The Other Beilbys”, that the enameller was the Scot, Anthony Taylor. The holy man in the enamelled medallions is thought to be Henry Stuart, younger son of James Stuart, The Old Pretender, who succeeded to the Stuart dynasty (recognised as King Henry IV by his supporters) on the death of his brother, Bonny Prince Charlie in 1788.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has an ovoid-shaped bowl measuring 6 cm (2.4 inches) in diameter at the gilded rim. The bowl is enamelled in ruby and white with two likenesses of a Christian holy man, believed to be Henry Stuart, linked with garlands of flowers. The bowl sits on a hexagonal-cut facet cut stem. The stem ends in a conical foot which measures 6.8 cm (2.7 inches) in diameter. The glass is 12.8 cm (5.1 inches) in height. There are a couple of minute unburst bubbles in the metal of the foot dating from manufacture. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. The glass is at a slight slant to the foot.

Lead glass weighing in at 150 g. (~ 5 oz.).
