This is a rare Georgian, double series opaque twist ale glass gilded in the atelier of James Giles and dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1765.
The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.
The glass has an extended rounded funnel-shaped bowl measuring 6.5 cm (2.6 inches) in diameter at the gilded rim. The bowl is beautifully gilded with hop flowers and barley ears and sits on a double series opaque twist stem consisting of thirteen white enamel “cotton” strands wound around a central twist of two white enamel cords. The stem ends in a conical foot which measures 8.1 cm (3.2 inches) in diameter. The glass is 20.7 cm (8.2 inches) in height. The foot and the rest of the glass are a marriage. A hole in the foot has been ground out and the stem inserted into the hole in the foot in an excellent attempt to hide the fact that the glass has been restored. It deceived us when we first saw it and most people would not know it had been done. There is a small white inclusion (probably clinker) in the metal of the bowl and a minute one in the metal of the foot, both dating from manufacture. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any other obvious evidence of restoration.
Lead glass weighing in at 220 g. (~ 8 oz.).
