Victorian small fern-engraved tankard or port sipper

This is a small Victorian English mouth-blown glass engraved tankard or port sipper with an applied handle dating from the second half of the 19th century, c1870.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 150 years of use.

The glass has a tapered cylindrical bowl measuring 5.5 cm (2.2 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is engraved with ferns and foliage representative of the period of pteridomania (obsession with ferns) and has a basal band of panel-cutting. The glass ends in a plain base sporting a wide polished out pontil mark which measures 6.5 cm (2.6 inches) in diameter. The glass is 8.3 cm (3.3 inches) in height. The handle was first applied to the bottom of the bowl and then finished off at the top. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.

It weighs in at 250 g. (~ 9 oz.).
