This is a large Georgian, hand-blown, egg and dart engraved, glass beer tumbler dating from the turn of the 18th/19th centuries, c1800, and capable of holding one quart of beer.
The glass is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows the age related wear and tear to both the rim of the bowl and to the rim of the foot consistent with some 250 years of use.
The glass has a bucket-shaped bowl measuring 12.2 cm (4.9 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is copper wheel engraved with a neoclassical egg and dart border under the rim and the initials “JIJC(?)” to the reverse within an egg and dart cartouche. The bottom of the bowl is cut with a band of finger flutes. The bowl ends in a base which measures 9.2 cm (3.7 inches) in diameter and carries a polished out pontil mark. The glass is 15 cm (6 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is a collector’s sticker to the base (which attributes the glass to 1770) and an Athelny Antiques stock number (Athelny Townsend was a well known dealer in Georgian glass based in Suffolk).
A lovely tumbler, perfect for a present for the home beer drinker.
It is made from lead metal weighing 725 g. (~ 1 lb. 10 oz.).
