This is a Georgian, “Bristol” green Indian club-shaped Hollands (Gin) decanter dating from the beginning of the 19th century, c1830.
The decanter is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows the age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 200 years of use.
The decanter has a gilded everted pouring lip and is round in cross-section. The decanter is decorated with a gilt faux label for Hollands “suspended” from a gilt chain. The base carries a polished out pontil mark and measures 8 cm (3.2 inches) in diameter. The decanter measures 19 cm (7.6 inches) in height without the stopper and 23.5 cm (9.4 inches) with the stopper inserted. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration. The gilding is slightly rubbed in places.
The stopper is of similar metal and is possibly the original. It has a gilded “H” on it in the same font as on the decanter. It does rock in the neck however which is not unusual for such decanters. At the same time it can be turned in the neck of the decanter and then the decanter lifted by the stopper when empty; always a good sign that they may have been made for each other.
English lead glass weighing in at 375 g. (~ 13 oz.).
