This is a scarce matched set of eight, Georgian, engraved, petal flute-cut, facet cut stem wine glasses dating from the end of the 18th century, c1790.
The glasses are in excellent condition for their age. This means, of course, that they show age related wear and tear commensurate with some 200 years of use. They mostly have polished out pontil marks to the undersides of the feet, although some remain rough.
The glasses have funnel-shaped bowls that measure 7 cm (2.8 inches) in diameter at the rims. The bowls are engraved with bands of tulips under the rims and are petal-flute cut to the lower halves. The bowls sit on eight sided vertically facet cut stems, the cuts radiating down from the petal flute cutting, and conical feet that also measure 7 cm (2.8 inches) in diameter. The glasses are 13.5 cm (5.4 inches) in height. Dimensions vary slightly from glass to glass as is to be expected of hand-blown glassware. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration. The set appears to be made up of parts of two original sets and the two different types are shown in images 2-4.
