This is a rare Georgian engraved tea caddy or jar dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1760.
The jar is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the base consistent with some 250 years of age and use. It has a rough pontil mark on the base.
The body of the jar is octagonal in cross-section, or rather oblong with chamfered corners, measuring 6.7 cm (2.7 inches) by 5.2 cm. (2.1 inches) across. The two wider sides of the jar are engraved with flora, the flowers on one side having the letters “SD” engraved above it, although the S is in mirrored form for some reason, probably the illiteracy of the engraver. The twos narrower sides are star-cut. The base is slightly kicked in. There is no lid. The jar measures 14.5 cm (5.8 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, scratches or any evidence of restoration.
A rare survivor in excellent condition for its type. It weighs in at 280 g. (~ 10 oz.).
