This is a rare, Georgian engraved glass preserve pot or sugar bowl, with its original lid, dating from the second half of the 18th century.
The bowl is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear consistent with some 250 years of use.
It has a waisted cup-shaped bowl and measures 10 cm (4 inches) in diameter at its widest point. The bowl is engraved with a stylised sunflower and leaf fronds. The bowl is 8 cm (3.2 inches) in height without the lid and 13.5 cm (5.4 inches) in height with the lid in place. It sits on a short, conical foot with a rough pontil mark to the underside that measures 8 cm. (3.2 inches) in diameter.
The lid is engraved in the same form as the bowl and is almost certainly the original. It is of the same colour and metal as the bowl and is an excellent fit. It is engraved with the same sunflower/leaf frond decoration and has an acorn finial with air tears to the wider part of the “acorn”.
There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any other evidence of restoration. An impressive piece of period glass in excellent condition.
English lead glass weighing in at 440 g. (~ 1 lb.).
