This is a William IV/early Victorian, mouth-blown, diamond-cut cylinder-shaped Nelson full size decanter dating from the early 19th century, c1840. It holds just about a full bottle of wine.
The decanter is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear consistent with some 180 years of use.
The decanter is cylinder shaped. The neck is decorated with three applied neck rings which have been cut with diamonds. The shoulders are cut with panels and the main body is cut with two bands of diamonds between prism cuts. There is a basal band of finger flute cutting. The base is star-cut with a polished out pontil mark to its centre and measures 10.7 cm (4.2 inches) in diameter. The decanter is 22.5 cm (9 inches) in height without the stopper and 25 cm (10 inches) in height with the stopper inserted.
The stopper is of radially cut mushroom form, and is probably not the original. It is of the same age, style and metal as the decanter and is a good fit but it can be made to wobble just a little in the neck and is not quite as grey. Having said that you can twist the stopper in the neck and lift the decanter up by the stopper when empty; always a good sign of a good fit.
There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.
