This is a Georgian, English colour twist wine glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1765.
The glass is in good condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.
The glass has a bucket-shaped bowl measuring 5.5 cm (2.2 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is plain and sits on a colour twist stem consisting of three central heavy opaque white corkscrew threads, two edged in translucent jade-green and one in translucent ruby-red, alternating with three opaque white spiral threads. The stem ends in a conical foot which measures 6 cm (2.4 inches) in diameter. The glass is 14.7 cm (5.9 inches) in height.
The following condition report was provided by Bonhams from whom the glass was sourced: “There are two tiny and very shallow fleabite flake-nicks underneath the foot rim, both adjacent to one another, which can be felt with a fingernail and viewed with the aid of a lens. The foot rim is uneven but this dates from manufacture, and there are the areas of light wear expected where the foot rim touches a surface when the glass is standing.” There are no other chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. The glass also has a slight lean to it. It has a collector’s sticker on the underside of the foot. A wine glass with a round funnel bowl on an identical stem was sold by Bonhams on 20 June 2023, lot 115.
Lead glass weighing in at 130 g. (~ 4 1/2 oz.). Not the most elegant colour twist we have ever seen but a bargain at the quoted price and with excellent provenance.
