Georgian, Scandinavian, engraved modified cruciform decanter

This is an early 19th century, mould-blown, modified cruciform carafe or decanter, originating in Scandinavia. The Scandinavian countries continued to make cruciform decanters well into the 19th century – see Andy McConnell, “The Decanter, Ancient to Modern” page 66. A similar but plain version of this one can be seen on page 124 of the same book and dated to the 1830s.

The decanter is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows the age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 200 years of use.

The neck of the carafe is plain save for an applied annular neck string ring. The body of the carafe is naively engraved with flower to each of the two wider sides and is grooved in construct to maximise the surface area exposed to the ice when cooling the contents. The body ends in a gently kicked-in base which measures 11.5 cm (4.6 inches) by 8.5 cm (3.4 inches). The base carries a rough pontil mark. The carafe is 24 cm (9.6 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, scratches or any evidence of restoration. It comes with an associated white metal and cork stopper of later date.

It weighs in at 560 g. (~ 1 lb. 4 oz.).
