Georgian wrythen moulded dwarf ale glass

This is a Georgian, English, “Somerset” wrythen-moulded dwarf ale glass dating from the turn of the 18th/19th centuries, c1800.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 200 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a funnel-shaped bowl measuring 5.8 cm (2.3 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is broad wrythen-moulded in the Somerset fashion and sits on a short, plain stem with a wrythened shoulder knop and a conical foot which measures 6.2 cm (2.5 inches) in diameter. The glass is 12.6 cm (5 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is an unburst bubble in the metal of the foot, and a white inclusion (probably clinker) embedded at the edge of the foot, both dating from manufacture.

It is made from lead metal weighing 120 g. (~ 4 oz.).
