This is a tall Strombergshyttan sommerso Sputnik glass vase in amethyst probably designed by Asta Stromberg (but often attributed to Gunnar Nylund) in the late 1950s. The vase was designed to commemorate the venture into space which was not actually achieved until 1961.
The vase is in excellent condition. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with use. The base carries a very neat polished out pontil mark.
The vase is a slightly convex cylinder in shape and measures 4.5 cm (1.8 inches) in diameter at its widest point. The vase is blown in amethyst glass cased in clear. The vase is 28.5 cm (11.4 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, other significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. The vase is unsigned.
It weighs in at 735 g. (~ 1 lb. 10 oz.).
