This is a Riihimaki of Finland blue Isoisä (Grandpa) figural decanter designed by Helena Tynell in 1969. The range consisted of four different figures based on characters from the Finnish author Zacharias Topelius’ children story ”Small Matti”. Each decanter was originally accompanied by a small schnapps glass which, unfortunately, is now missing. The series was in production until 1971.
The decanter is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 50 years of use.
The decanter is of oblong-form, is blown in blue glass cased in clear, and measures 10.5 cm (4.2 inches) by 6.8 cm (2.7 inches) across at the widest points in cross-section. The decanter is 21 cm (8.4 inches) in height without the stopper and 22 cm (8.8 inches) in height with the stopper inserted. The body of the decanter is moulded in a whimsical figural form. The stopper is in clear glass and oblong in shape. It is almost certainly the original and is an excellent fit, and is of the correct type and metal. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.
It weighs in at 955 g. (~ 2 lb. 2 oz.).
