This is a scarce pair of small enamelled glass tea saucers dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1750, and probably originating in Germany. Such pieces were blown to try and emulate the Chinese porcelain that was so successful in the European market and which the European producers were striving to develop.
The saucers are in excellent condition for their age. This means, of course, that they show age related wear and tear to the rims of the bases commensurate with over 250 years of use. They have a rough pontil mark on the middle of the bases.
The saucers are in white opaline glass and are shallow cup-shaped, measuring 10.7 cm (4.3 inches) in diameter at the rims; and only 2.4 cm (1 inch) in height. The insides of the saucers are each enamelled with four quadrants around a central circle in which in single flower and foliage features. Two of the quadrants show perched dove-like birds in woodland. The two others are enamelled with polychrome flowers in blue, yellow, green and two shades of ochre. The saucers are raised on a small ring foot. There are no chips, cracks, or any evidence of restoration.
Each weighs only 58 g. (~ 2 oz.). Dimensions vary very slightly from saucer to saucer as is to be expected of hand-blown items.
