Victorian Bristol blue flagon decanter, pouring stopper

SORRY SOLD

Out of stock

This is a late Victorian, mouth-blown Bristol blue flagon decanter dating from the end of the 19th century, c1880.

The flagon is in excellent condition for its age. It shows the age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 140 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark to the base.

The decanter is in a Bristol blue coloured glass with a yellow metal topped sleeve and original pouring stopper. The flagon measures 12 cm (4.8 inches) in diameter at its widest point, and is 19 cm (7.6 inches) in height without the stopper and 21 cm (8.4 inches) in height with the stopper inserted. There is a small loop handle finished off at the bottom with a flattened curlicue. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration. The yellow plate has eroded from the stopper leaving the base metal exposed in part.

The stopper is an interesting one. The metal and cork peg is hollow as is the globe part of the stopper which has a small pouring spout. The liquor in the flagon can be tilted and poured without having to remove the stopper.

It weighs in at 680 g. (~ 1 lb. 8 oz.).
