This is a William IV/early Victorian, mouth-blown, Bristol blue glass mell decanter and stopper dating from the early to mid 19th century, c1835/1840.
The decanter is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows the age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 180 years of use. There is a polished out pontil mark to the underside of the base.
The decanter has been mouth-blown in Bristol blue glass. The decanter measures 16.5 cm (6.6 inches) in diameter at its widest point. The decanter is 20 cm (8 inches) in height without the stopper and 25 cm (9.6 inches) in height to the top of the stopper when inserted. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration.
There is a yellow metal and cork stopper of the correct style that comes with the decanter. The metal part of the stopper is incised with the word “GIN”. It is probably the original.
A very nice looking decanter weighing in at 565 g. (~ 1 lb. 4 oz.).
