This is a Victorian, small, mouth-blown, engraved ovoid bowl wine or dram glass, looking like a small rummer.
The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the extreme rim of the foot consistent with some 100+ years of age and use. It has a polished out pontil mark on the underside of the foot.
The glass has an ovoid-shaped bowl measuring 6.5 cm (2.6 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl sits on a merise and a plain tapering stem that ends in a conical foot that measures 5.8 cm (2.3 inches) in diameter. The bowl is engraved with a laurel wreath border under the rim, under which is engraved the legend “Success, to, Silver, Dale”. We cannot be sure of the reference but there is coastal village of that name in Lancashire and it could be a memento of a visit there, but the Success portion normally points to a venture of some form. It could relate to SS Silverdale, a British steam cargo ship which was built in 1893 and later sank in 1910. The glass is 10.5 cm (4.2 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious signs of restoration.
English lead glass, it weighs in at 150 g. ( ~ 5 oz.).
