This is a Richardsons of Stourbridge white opaline enamelled and gilded vase dating from the middle of the 19th century, c1850.
The vase is in excellent condition for its age. This means of course that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 170 years of use.
The vase has a baluster-shaped body measuring 6.7 cm (2.7 inches) in diameter at the pouring rim which is gilded to the edge. The bowl is in white opaline glass decorated at the neck with a gilded band. The body is enamelled to one side with two mythical figures – a warrior and an angel – and to the reverse with gilded scrollwork. The vase ends in a base that measures 6.5 cm (2.6 inches) in diameter. It is 8 cm (3.2 inches) in diameter at its widest point. The vase is 21 cm (8.4 inches) in height. The base is decorated with two bands of gilding. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any other obvious evidence of restoration. There is an enamelled maker’s mark for “Richardson’s Stourbridge” on the base which also features a collector’s sticker.
A nice vase weighing in at 500 g. (~ 1 lb. 2 oz.).
