Victorian mouth-blown bucket bowl penny lick

This is a Victorian bucket bowl penny lick dating from about 1860. A penny lick was a small glass used by street vendors for serving ice cream at a cost of one penny per serving. The customer would lick clean the glass and return it to the vendor, who would reuse it. They fell out of use due to the hygiene problems that resulted. It has a polished out pontil mark on the bottom of the foot. The rounded bottom of the bowl makes it less than suitable for containing liquid and ideal from which to lick ice-cream.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to both the rim of the bowl and to the rim of the foot consistent with 150+ years of use.

The glass has a bucket-shaped bowl measuring 5.7 cm (2.2 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is heavily thickened towards the base to reduce the amount of ice cream it contained. The bowl sits on a capstan stem with a medial angular knop which leads to a conical foot that also measures 5.7 cm (2.2 inches) in diameter. The glass is 10.2 cm (4.1 inches) in height. It weighs 180 g. ( ~ 6 oz.). There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.
