This is a late Victorian cup bowl penny lick dating from the second half of the 19th century, c1860. A penny lick was a small glass used by street vendors for serving ice cream at a cost of one penny per serving. The customer would lick clean the glass and return it to the vendor, who would reuse it. They fell out of use due to the hygiene problems that resulted.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to both the rim of the bowl and to the rim of the foot consistent with 100+ years of use. It has a T-shaped gadget mark to the base which dates it pretty accurately to the period noted.

The glass has a cup-shaped bowl measuring 6 cm (2.4 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is heavily thickened towards the base to reduce the amount of ice cream it contained. The bowl sits on a capstan stem which leads to a conical foot which measures 5.7 cm (2.3 inches) in diameter. The glass is 7.5 cm (3 inches) in height. It weighs 185 g. ( ~ 6 1/2 oz.). There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.
