This is a pair of late Georgian, mouth-blown, barrel-shaped, gilded Bristol blue decanters dating from the beginning of the 19th century, c1820.
The decanters are in excellent condition for their age. This means, of course, that they show age related wear and tear consistent with some 200 years of use.
The decanters are barrel-shaped with everted pouring rims. The decanters were blown in Bristol blue glass and then gilded with faux labels for Hollands (Gin) and Brandy. The pouring rims are also gilded. The bases measure 7 cm (2.8 inches) in diameter and have rough pontil marks to the underside. The decanters measure 8.8 cm (3.5 inches) in diameter at their widest points. They are 18 cm (7.2 inches) in height without the stoppers and 22.5 cm (9 inches) in height with the stoppers inserted.
The stoppers are of solid ball form and appear to be the originals. They are decorated with radial gilding, are of the same colour and shade, and are an excellent fit.
There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration. There is some light rubbing of the gilding and some light scratching to external surfaces. Dimensions vary slightly from decanter to decanter as should be expected of mouth-blown glass.
Each decanter weighs 545 g. (~ 1 lb. 3 oz.). An impressive pair of decanters.
