Georgian plain stem hop and barley engraved ale glass

SORRY SOLD

Out of stock

This is a Georgian, English, hop and barley engraved plain stem ale glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1750.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the bottom of the foot.

The glass has an extended ogee-shaped bowl measuring 5.8 cm. (2.3 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is engraved with a single hop flower to one side and a pair of barley ears in saltire (crossed) on the reverse. The bottom third of the bowl is moulded with finger flutes. The bowl sits on a plain stem and a conical, folded foot which measures 7.5 cm. (3 inches) in diameter. The glass is 17.2 cm (6.9 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is a small white inclusion (probably clinker) in the metal of the bowl and another on the edge of the folded foot, both dating from manufacture.

It is made from lead metal weighing 160 g. (~ 6 oz.).
